The
Little Fairy Goddess
by Lyn Santos
I open up my sleepy eyes to the bright sunlight that falls
thru my Dora-the-Explorer window curtains. I feel the warmth
of the sun on my sleepy face and can’t wait for this
day to start. A nice cool breeze also enters my room and
I feel very lively.
Jumping out of bed I almost trip over my cat Blue who is
resting peacefully on the soft blue carpet on the floor
beside my little blue bed. I love the color blue.
I look out my window and the sky is a light blue without
a cloud in the sky. It is going to be such a great day!
You see, I am a fairy goddess named Iona who can turn little
kids into very weird creatures. I know you probably don’t
believe me but I really can.
I even have a magic wand that I made out of tinfoil. It
didn’t take too long to make and to me it’s
perfect for turning little kids into weird creatures. Just
a little flip of my wrist and presto – they turn into
a Girturtle or an Allicougar.
A Girturtle is a mix of a giraffe and a turtle of course
and an Allicougar is a mix between an alligator and a cougar.
I have other creatures that I can turn kids into and they
don’t even know it.
To me it is so funny to see my friends walking around
looking weird. I laugh out loud at them and they just don’t
seem to get the joke. Actually, most of my friends think
I am very weird so it is odd that I even have friends.
I do have a best friend named Jonathan and he is the cutest
little boy I have ever seen in my life! I call him Pumpkinhead
because one year his parents dressed him up as a pumpkin
and ever since then the nickname has stuck. He doesn’t
mind when I call him Pumpkinhead. I think he has a secret
crush on me.
Pumpkinhead is the only friend that I never turn into
a weird creature. He is my bestest pal in the whole wide
world and he always sticks up for me when others tell me
that I am weird. I would do anything for Pumpkinhead.
I skip breakfast and decide to go hunt down Pumpkinhead
to see if he can help me pick some kids to turn into weird
creatures. I know breakfast is the most important meal of
the day but I am way too excited to use my magic wand.
Knocking on Pumpkinhead’s door I hope he is home.
I would be sad if I didn’t have my best friend with
me to use my magic wand. I hear the door opening and it
is my best buddy and pal!
“Hi ya Pumpkinhead!” I exclaim with great
happiness. “Can you come out with me to turn some
kids into weird creatures?”
“Sure Iona, let me go tell my mom,” he says.
Oops, I forgot to tell my mom I was going out. Oh well,
she won’t miss me anyway. She is probably going to
be busy with her flower garden.
Pumpkinhead leaps out of his front porch step with a big
jump. He is just as excited as I am. He is wearing his favorite
outfit of blue jeans and his black Old Navy shirt. He has
the sleeves rolled all the way up so that he looks cool.
“Who should we get first with the magic wand?”
I ask.
“I dunno, how about that one kid we can’t
stand, Jeremy?” he replies.
“Great idea!” I yell.
We set off to find Jeremy, laughing and joking the whole
walk to his house. My shoes have holes in them and I can
feel the wind blowing through my feet. I hope they don’t
stink because I don’t want Pumpkinhead not to like
me anymore just because of the way my feet smell.
My magic wand is ready for action. I grip it a little
tighter because of the wind blowing. If my wand were to
blow away I don’t know what I would do. I guess I
could make another one but there is nothing like this one.
It is so powerful and magical.
Jeremy is outside of his house playing catch with his
little brother Billy.
He spots us and stops throwing the ball midair to yell
at us to go away and to leave him and his little brother
alone.
Before I know what I am doing, I wave the magic wand towards
him and yell, “Jeremy, you are now a Rhinokey!”
All of a sudden a huge horn appears on Jeremy’s
nose and his back is the shape of a donkey. Both Pumpinhead
and I start cracking up as Jeremy gets really mad.
“Iona, you are a psycho case!” Jeremy screams.
“I am not a Rhinokey and you don’t have magical
powers!”
At that moment, I look again and it’s just Jeremy
standing there shaking his fist at us. Oh no! He’s
right. He isn’t a Rhinokey.
I turn to Pumpkinhead and he looks at me all sad.
“Iona,” he says, “I never wanted to
hurt your feelings so I never said anything to you about
your magical powers not really being real. I just went along
with it because you are so much fun to be around and I love
laughing with you.”
I learned a very important lesson that day. You know who
your true friends are. And with that I let go of the magic
wand and watched it blow away among the dandelions and the
green grass until it blew far away down the street until
I couldn’t see it anymore.
