Candlelight Stories endorses Senator Barack Obama for President because we think that he represents the country's best opportunity to correct the terrible mistakes that have been made over the past decade. We think that Barack Obama has made an excellent decision in choosing Joe Biden as his Vice Presidential running mate. Senator Biden brings a lifetime of experience in foreign affairs to the Democratic ticket. Barack Obama could not have made a better choice. We think that Senator Obama is an extremely well-educated and highly intelligent man who understands how complex economic and foreign affairs issues really are. He is very well-equipped to deal with these issues if he takes office as President.
Just as most newspapers pick a candidate to endorse and write an editorial explaining their endorsement, Candlelight Stories takes this opportunity to explain its decision.
Several weeks ago, we made our endorsement of Senator Obama public and received several letters expressing outrage. These 'shame on you' letters took the position that our injection of politics into a site with material for children and adults was somehow inappropriate. We could not disagree more. In fact, several of these letters took on a distinctly racist tone and were disturbing to read for that reason. Children are routinely taught about politics and race in this country from their earliest years in school. We see no reason to hide our endorsement of Senator Obama from anyone.
We were shocked to see a Republican Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota filled almost entirely with white faces and white speakers. There were almost no faces of color anywhere to be found at the Republican Convention. Compare this with the sea of happy people from all races and walks of life who attended the Democratic Convention in Denver, Colorado. This, coupled with statements by the Republican campaign manager which clearly stated that they were running the convention exactly the way they wanted to run it and they would not need any minority votes in order to win the election, has convinced us beyond any doubt whatsoever that the United States is still fighting a battle against deeply ingrained racism.
We at Candlelight Stories are appalled at some of the blatantly racist attacks being directed at Senator Obama by Republican supporters. We think that Senator Obama's handling of these attacks has been level-headed and superbly presidential.
We are aware that this endorsement and editorial will result in more nasty emails and letters. We are not at all offended by these and in fact encourage any individual or educational entity that is disgusted by our support for Senator Obama to immediately stop using our web site. We think that Candlelight Stories and people of all ages in our country are better off without you.
To go further, we at Candlelight Stories think that the trend in education in certain areas of this country over the past decade toward religious, racial and ethnic intolerance is dangerous and inexcusable. We take this opportunity to separate ourselves from any group, educational organization, individual, or web site that leans toward a religious perspective or adopts an intolerant approach to education. We think it is beyond argument that children should be taught about evolution and science at all grade levels. We think that there is no place for religion in government or in a school. If you disagree, please unplug from Candlelight Stories and do not consider returning.
Barack Obama stands for unity and for all people of all colors in our nation. He quite obviously wants to help people no matter what their ethnicity or religious beliefs. He and his running mate, Joe Biden, speak and perform their jobs with intelligence, the wisdom of experience, and a true joy in giving people in all walks of life a sense of hope and freedom.
